Drugs are taken for relief against pain, illness or other psychological problems. All drugs have an effect on the body, whether helpful or harmful. When taken in excessive doses, it is harmful. For example, while morphine reduces the sensation of pain by altering the activities of cells in the brain and spinal cord, it also alters the function of cells in brain and spinal cord, it also alters the function of cells in other parts of the body that are not involved in sensing pain. People who take large amounts of drugs such as alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates or narcotics may become dependent on them.
In case the drug is stopped, it causes severe withdrawal symptoms. As these drugs are continued, it leads to tolerance ar resistance to the drug’s effect. In such cases, the patient needs larger doses to obtain the desired effects. This physical or psychological dependence is commonly known as drug addiction.
