Fishermen collect more than 50,000 kg of fish on the first day of the annual Chagan Winter Fishing Festival. Incidentally, Chagan, home to some 70 species of fish, is one of the 10 largest freshwater lakes in China. It is the only place in north China where fishermen catch fish from frozen water. Before they start fishing, the fisherman hold a small ritual known as waking the Lake Ceremony, as a way of paying respect and showing graduate to the lake. After the catch, fish are thrown up into the sky as a symbol of happiness and abundance. Hundreds of people are known to attend this festival. The amount of fish caught is speculated to be about 2 million kg.
